  1. WHATSNEW.TXT: New WinU Features
  2.  
  3. WinU Version 3.1, released December 2, 1996
  4.  
  5.    License Meter Management: if your organization has, say, ten licenses
  6.    for a particular program, you can ensure that no more than ten users
  7.    are accessing that program simultaneously.
  8.    
  9.    Dynamic configuration update: if desired, WinU will look for config
  10.    data files at startup in whatever directory you designate (perhaps
  11.    on a server).  If found, they will replace the current configuration
  12.    with whatever setup data they contain, allowing you to add or change
  13.    all desks, buttons, passwords, or options dynamically and remotely.
  14.    
  15.    WinU now disables the Delete key and right-click context menus in 
  16.    File | Open and other Common Dialogs, and in Explorer's right-side
  17.    pane.  This prevents using the Delete key to delete files from 
  18.    Common Dialogs, or using right-click context menus as a backdoor way 
  19.    to run unauthorized programs.

  21.    Strengthened "third-party window" processing, to more vigorously 
  22.    remove such windows when they are not allowed.  Exceptions can now 
  23.    be specified, windows that are allowed to remain visible even when 
  24.    "third-party" windows are prohibited.

  26.    "Third-party" windows can now be disallowed for individual desks, in
  27.    addition to allowing or disallowing them systemwide as before.

  29.    Button label text is no longer required.  A WinU button can now be
  30.    just an icon in a button border.  This is set in the Button Style
  31.    section of the Appearance And Sound tab.

  33.    Added the PrevDesk button type.  If created on the desktop by the
  34.    administrator, user can go back to the previously-visited desk by 
  35.    clicking on the button.  The last 100 visited desks are available.
  36.    Like all buttons, a PrevDesk button can be password-protected.

  38.    New wallpaper option: display background bitmap at its actual size
  39.    (not stretched to fit available space).  This is good for text and
  40.    other finely detailed images.

  42.    New wallpaper option: tile the background bitmap.  This option will
  43.    copy the bitmap as many times as required to fill the space.

  45.    New sound option: loop (play repeatedly) the desk logon sound when
  46.    no program is currently running.

  51.    saved when exiting for MS-DOS mode or an unanticipated shutdown.

  79.    per week to be associated with a particular remote password.

  81.    Previously, per-computer cumulative time limits could indicate minutes per
  82.    day, per week, or simply total minutes (when they're used up, they're gone).
  83.    Now you can also indicate minutes per logon session as a per-computer
  84.    cumulative time test.

  86.    Previously, the desktop's cumulative time counter only lost time when a 
  87.    program from that desk was actually running.  If no program was running, 
  88.    the clock didn't lose time.  In this version, the desktop timer keeps 
  89.    running whether a program is running or not.  So, regardless of whether 
  90.    the time limits are imposed by the password file parameters or from the 
  91.    local machine's setup, they work the same way.

  93.    Remote file passwords are no longer case sensitive.  Passwords set up
  94.    locally are case sensitive only if the new "case sensitive" box is checked.

  104.    options (wallpaper, button styles, show/hide the menu and status bar).  
  105.    Attach sound to WinU events.  New navigation elements: DeskLink, Exit, and 
  106.    Shutdown buttons.  Button options to AutoRun a program at desk logon, keep 
  107.    program running until desk logoff, and allow a program to continue to run 
  108.    after exiting from the desk it was started from.  Can now run Shortcuts, 
  109.    including shortcuts to printers, Dial-Up Networking, or other Win95 
  110.    components.  Ultra-robust Kiosk Mode for the most demanding public-access 
  111.    situations.  Built-in Explorer window for when you need access to the full 
  112.    computer (with password control of course).  Much better when tracking 
  113.    modem-using apps.  Blockout periods: times when nothing on that desk will 
  114.    run (for example "Every Tuesday 9 pm to 11 pm" or "Every weekday 7:30 pm 
  115.    to 8:30 pm").  Can disable CD-ROM autorun.  QuickNotes, so you can attach 
  116.    a little message to a logfile record when exiting a program (perhaps for 
  117.    billing purposes).  And the proverbial Much More.
